Tsunamis travel at very high speeds across an
ocean basin. The map above shows the travel progression
of the December 2004 tsunami that was generated by
an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. Note how the wave
struck Sri Lanka and India within two hours and had
completely crossed the Indian Ocean in about ten hours.
