A large iceberg is disrupting normal wind and current patterns near McMurdo Sound. This is preventing the annual break-up of ice, and could possibly leave the Sound frozen through the summer season. Parent penguins may not be able to swim the great distance to open water and make the return trip with food for their chicks.
