One of the strongest earthquakes in the past century has struck off the west cost of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Reported by the USGS as a 9.0 magnitude event, this indonesian earthquake caused a 600 mile-long rupture in the ocean floor. This is shown on the map below along with aftershock locations. Tsunamis from this earthquake have drowned thousands in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia.
